Tie-breaking Policy of this bridge year (2008)

In principle, there is no tie in each individual team match.  Traditionally, in case of tie, direct comparisons will take priority in the tie-breaking teams.  Failing that, IMP Quotient will be considered.  Other possible considerations might be discussed in the Council meeting on the individual basis.

Single Cup Events

The formats and procedures for the Cup Events are applicable for the bridge year 2008 only.

Chiu Ming Cup (1-session MP Pairs Event)

A simple Scrambled Mitchell movement will be used for all sessions with more than 7 tables.  2 or more sections will be made if there are more than 16 tables.  The pair accumulated the highest match-points (across the sections if necessary) is the winner.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.

It will be held together with AGM (Annual General Meeting) of Bridge House.  The AGM and the trophy presentation will be held at the middle of the game.  The Chiu Ming Cup will be presented right after the end of the match. Scores will not be adjusted after the presentation of trophies.

SP Chan Cup (3-session Teams Event)

A single round-robin, direct matches or multiple team movement will be played over 3 sessions without a final.  The team accumulated the most victory points (VPs) will be the winner.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.

SK Luk Cup (2-session MP Pairs Event)

A 2-session pair movement (probably a Mitchell and an Inter-woven Howell, whenever appropriate) will be used.  The pair accumulated the highest match-points (or percentage, if necessary) is the winner.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.

Donation Party (1-session MP Pairs Event)

A simple Scrambled Mitchell movement will be used with more than 7 tables.  2 or more sections will be made if there are more than 16 tables.  The pair accumulated the highest match-points (across the sections if necessary) is the winner.  Tentatively, free game coupons will be given to the first 3 ranks.

HKCBA Cup (1-session Pairs/Individual Event)

Only the council members of the local bridge clubs and bridge clubs of post-secondary institutes will be invited. A simple Scrambled Mitchell movement will be used with more than 7 tables.  2 sections will be made if there are more than 16 tables.  The pair/player accumulated the highest match-points (across the sections if necessary) is the winner.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks. The HKCBA Cup will be presented right after the end of the match. Scores will not be adjusted after the presentation of trophies.

Year-round Events

The formats and procedures for the Year-round Events are applicable for the bridge year 2008 only.

Ladder Team (Bridge Friends Cup)

TWO sessions of qualifying rounds will be played without a final.  A single round-robin, direct matches or multiple team movement will be used in these 2 sessions to identify the teams in Ladders A, B and C in the first Ladder Team event.

A quartet (4 teams) will be qualified into Ladders A and B.  The Ladder A and B will maintain a quartet, if possible, throughout the year.  They will play with direct matches of 9 boards each, without half-time.

There is NO Ladder D or below.  ALL new teams will be starting from Ladder C.  With different number of teams, number of Ladders will be varied:

25 (5 boards/round)

7

24 (4 boards/round)

If there are 4 or less teams in the Ladder, WBF VP scale will be used and a bonus of 5 VPs will be added for each direct match won and 2.5 VPs for a tie.  If there are 5 or more teams in the Ladder, Swiss VP scale will be used without extra bonus VPs.

The last 2 teams in Ladder A will be demoted to Ladder B and the top 2 teams in Ladder B will be promoted to Ladder A in the next Ladder Team event.  Similarly, the last 2 teams in Ladder B will be demoted to Ladder C (to separate Ladder C if there are Ladders C1 and C2) and the top 2 teams in Ladder C (or the winning teams in Ladder C1 and C2) will be promoted to Ladder B in the next Ladder Team event.  For ties, direct matches and then IMP Quotients will be taken into account accordingly.

Moreover, all teams should have 2 anchor players. Ranking point will be given to the each team in the following basis:

Ladder A         : 20, 17, 14, 12

Ladder B          : 14, 11, 9, 7

Ladder C(s)     :  9, 7, 5, 3, 1, 1, 1 …

The overall winner is the team accumulating the most ranking points from the best 6 out of the 9 Ladder Team events, excluding the qualifying rounds.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.  For ties, all 8 Ladder Teams events will be taken into account.

Pool Team (TK Lum Memorial Cup)

All teams will be divided into 2 pools, namely Pool A and Pool B.  The general direction is to have as many teams as possible in Pool A.  However, the number of teams in Pool A is depending on the total number of teams that night. The maximum number of teams in Pool A will be 6 and it must less than the one in Pool B.  In case of 10 or more teams in Pool B, it will be further divided evenly into Pools B1 and B2.  ALL new teams will be starting from Pool B.

There is no qualifying round.  For the first session, there is no Pool A and all teams will be put in Pools B1 and B2. In the Pools, the format will depend on the number of teams participated:

No. of teams

Format

No. of boards

2

Direct match (with half time)

24 (24 boards/round)

3

Trio (with half time)

24 (12 boards/round)

24 (4 boards/round)

8

If there are 4 or less teams in the Pool, WBF VP scale will be used and a bonus of 5 VPs will be added for each direct match won and 2.5 VPs for a tie.  If there are 5 or more teams in the Pool, Swiss VP scale will be used without bonus VPs.  The teams with higher running Ranking Points will be assigned to Pool A while the rest will be in Pool B.

Ranking point will be given to the each team in the following basis:

Pool A : 20, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9

Pool B  : 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1, 1, …

Each team should have 2 anchor players.  The overall winner is the team accumulating the most ranking points from the best 4 out of the 8 events.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.  For ties, all 8 events will be taken into account.

IMP Pairs (Andy Chiu Cup)

A simple Scrambled Mitchell movement will be used for all sessions with more than 7 tables.  2 sections may be made if there are more than 16 tables.  Otherwise, a Howell movement will be used with 7 or less tables.  Total comparison of International Match Points (across the sections if needed) will be used in this event.

Ranking point will be given to the each pair in the following basis:

10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 (for first 9 pairs of each game only)

The overall winner is the pair accumulating the most ranking points from the best 5 out of 7 IMP Pairs.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.  For ties, all 7 IMP Pairs events will be taken into account.

MP Pairs (SC Kan Cup)

A simple Scrambled Mitchell movement will be used for all sessions with more than 7 tables.  2 sections may be made if there are more than 16 tables.  Otherwise, a Howell movement will be used with 7 or less tables.  Simple Match Points (across the sections if needed) will be used in this event.

Ranking point will be given to the each pair in the following basis:

10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 (for first 9 pairs of each game only)

The overall winner is the pair accumulating the most ranking points from the best 5 out of 7 MP Pairs events.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.  For ties, all 7 MP Pairs events will be taken into account.

All-rounded Pairs (Seneca Kwan Cup)

A simple Scrambled Mitchell movement will be used for all sessions with more than 7 tables.  2 sections may be made if there are more than 16 tables. Otherwise, a Howell movement will be used with 7 or less tables.

Both match-point scoring and total comparison of IMP will be calculated.  Both scoring will be mathematically re-scaled into 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest).  In order to overcome some abnormal score from IMP score, re-scaled match-point score will be counted as 55% of the final score while the re-scaled IMP score will take only 45%.

Ranking point will be given to the each player in the following basis:

10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 (for first 9 pairs of each game only)

The overall winner is the player accumulating the most ranking points from the best 4 out of 6 All-rounded Pairs events.  Trophies will be given to the first 3 ranks.  For ties, all 7 All-rounded pairs events will be taken into account.

Non-tournament Events

The formats and procedures for the following non-tournament events are applicable for the bridge year 2008 only.

Peter Chun Cup

It is not a tournament by itself.  This trophy is awarded to the player getting the most master points at the end of the current year.

Calculation of the master points:            MP = (N x F) / R

For the parameters:       N = No. of teams / 10     for teams event

N = No. of pairs / 20       for pairs event

                                    F = 6                               for Ladder A / Pool A

                                    F = 4                               for Ladder B

                                    F = 3                               for Ladder C / Pool B or general event

R = Ranking in that event

Master points are only awarded to the upper half of the field of the event.  All master points will be rounded to the nearest one decimal place.  Only 50% of the master points accumulated in the previous years can be brought forward to the current year.

Simon Hui Cup (Best of the Best)

It is not a tournament by itself.  This trophy is awarded to the player getting the most Special Ranking Points during the current year.

Special Ranking Point will be given to the each player getting the top ranking in each tournament of those 4 year-round tournaments (Ladder Team, IMP pairs, MP Pairs and Pool Team) in the following basis:

10, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1

MP4.9 Cup

It is not a tournament by itself.  This trophy is awarded to the student players accumulated 4.9 master points in this year.  Each awardee can get once throughout the life.
